Blip Blip App

The app that keeps a track of time.

This is a very simple app which helps us keep a track of time.
It gives a notification sound after a preset interval of 15/30/45 mins or 1 hour.

For e.g. It reminds us to perform neck and shoulder exercises every 30 mins, or to stare at a distant objects other than the PC screen.
Very helpful for people who sit in front of their PCs for a longer duration of time and risk developing neck and shoulder or eyesight related problems.

ISRO sets record, launches PSLV-C34 with 20 satellites

Today (Wednesday, 22-June) marked another landmark day for ISRO, launching PSLV C-34 carrying 20 satellites into the space. This also happened to be the 34th successful launch of PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) in a row. The PSLV rocket has launched over 110 satellites, including 57 from international customers.

Every launch of PSLV comes with specific challenges that require innovative technical solutions.

PSLV-C34 posed two major challenges: It had to launch a record number of satellites — i.e. 20. Second, the primary satellite was Cartosat-2 weighing 727.5kg had to launch in a polar sun synchronous orbit (SSO), while 19 other satellites together weighing 560kg had to be launched in another orbit. This was the technological challenge that scientists successfully met in this mission.

Cartosat 2 is an advanced remote sensing satellite developed by India. The images sent by this satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban and rural applications, road network monitoring, water distribution, and other Geographical Information System (LIS & GIS).

The co-passenger satellites came from the US (13), Canada (2), Germany and Indonesia (one each), besides the 2 nano satellites from Indian academic institutions (Satyabama University and College of Engineering, Pune)

Twitter and machine learning

From the recent developer conferences of Google (Google I/O) and Apple (WWDC 2016), it was very clear that these tech giants are focusing on machine learning and making their own Operating systems more smart.

Twitter today announced that they are buying AI Startup firm Magic Pony and that they are also focusing on Machine learning.

Magic Pony uses neural networks (system designed to 'think' like humans) to improve images and videos.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also commented that “Machine learning is increasingly at the core of everything we build at Twitter”

Day is not far when the machines will be able to think and bear emotions like humans. (There are few such prototypes under testing even today).

It seems that machine learning is spreading everywhere and soon we may not be able to spot a difference between a machine and a real person ?

Invisibility Cloak

Concept of invisibility cloak is not new to many of us, we have witnessed this in Harry Potter and James bond movies as well.

However, in a breakthrough report, it is revealed that the researchers from the University of Rochester, New York have succeeded in creating an invisibility cloak (or sheet). By using this cloak, we can make and object invisible to the human eye.

Not only this, there were reports that British and US military troops have been testing a Harry Potter-style ‘invisibility cloak’ that makes them disappear on the battlefield.
During field trials in the US, it is reported that the soldiers used a high-tech camouflage sheeting called Vatec that even hid them from infra-red and heat-seeking devices.

Right now, the technology has its limitations, but who can say, in near future, we might see (or not see) the fully functional invisibility cloak in action ?
